Community & Economic Development

The Slater Group offers the following Community & Economic Development services

Empowered Destinations®

The Slater Group has developed a comprehensive methodology to transform communities into Empowered Destinations®, where people want to visit, stay, work, and raise families. Our unique community and economic development model, E5, provides communities with a way to proactively position themselves as regional leaders of quality community life.

E5 provides communities with the ability to reposition into being more vibrant, renewable, sustainable, and competitive in today’s global society and economy. Developing and implementing strategies under each of the five areas of E5 – (1) Education, (2) Entertainment, (3) Entrepreneurial, (4) Environment, and (5) Energy – creates synergy that enables communities to transform themselves.

Community Planning & Development

Elimination of the economic base in American communities creates a downward spiral of outward migration, small business closings, empty industrial buildings, unoccupied homes, along with a reduction in the tax base and government services, resulting in a decline of quality of community life. Communities must act before the local conditions become too severe to reverse.

Communities should develop a new local economy based on a self-sustaining economic model. Instead of just looking to land a big industry, they must look within their own regions and identify the assets they have and the ones they can create that will bring people to their area to visit and live.

The Slater Group has developed a comprehensive assessment and planning model that enables communities to identify their strengths and challenges and map a direction toward economic sustainability.

Industry Sector Planning

Within each community or service area are businesses and industries creating the jobs that fuel local economies. Each of these businesses and industries falls within an industry sector which collectively defines a community’s economy and quality of community life.

We can assist in the identification, assessment, visioning, and strategic planning related to sustaining and expanding existing and attracting new industry sectors.

We facilitate competing businesses and industries through a process that benefits them and their industry sector without giving up competitive secrets. The result is a plan that addresses all local aspects related to the expansion of the number of industry sectors and the continued success and expansion of business and industry within a sector.

Economic Development

There are very few activities within a community that are harder to define than that of economic development. From one perspective it involves everyone and everything in the community, and from another it is one of the most confidential and least understood. Recruiting or expanding businesses and industries within a community is made even more difficult because in most cases, the client does not want anyone to know their intent or timing.

With over 25 years of experience, The Slater Group has developed ways to reduce the uncertainty and still meet the needs of clients. We can assist your organization and community in the development of a comprehensive community and economic development plan.

Workforce Development

A major factor in the ability of communities to attract and retain businesses and industries is their capacity to provide and sustain an educated and skilled workforce. With the high dropout rates in high schools and colleges, combined with skill obsolescence created by an ever-increasing rate of advances in technology and many other factors, a community can become non-competitive in a very short time.

We have over 25 years of experience in developing and sustaining competitive workforces. We assess the issues and provide strategies impacting the development of the workforce and the strategies for keeping it current. We assist educational organizations in focusing on business and industry needs while improving their outcomes and revenues.

Entrepreneurial Development

The entrepreneurial spirit has fueled the innovations and inventions that created America’s quality of life and made America the greatest economic engine in the world. The ability to think and act as a self-driven, innovator and risk-taking owner, regardless of position or job responsibility, is critical to making today’s organizations and communities successful.

Drive through any community and count the number of vacant spaces for businesses in retail outlets, strip malls, and other buildings, then multiply the number by 3 and that is approximately how many new entrepreneurs your community currently needs. The majority of jobs in America exist within small businesses.

Communities, governments, education, and non-profit organizations are all faced with transforming to an entrepreneurial spirit and sustainable business model. If you are transforming your community, organization, and/or creating educational and training programs we have the knowledge and experience to assist you.
